Special Advisory to our Patients & Parents

Concerning all “Sport Drinks” and metabolite replacement drinks containing mono-potassium phosphate (or Phosphoric Acid).

Recently, the New England Journal of Medicine published a paper, which stated that drinks containing mono-potassium phosphate should be avoided by women near menopause and growing adolescents because the phosphate draws calcium out of the bones. It also draws calcium away from the enamel of your teeth and can cause permanent white or brown spots and even more serious decay if enough is consumed. We see this decay and staining occur not under the braces but around them. Often our patients who play lots of sports fill their water bottles with these drinks. When your braces come off we want your teeth to look great! Please look for this ingredient and help eliminate this problem.
